Cleaning out my TiVo, I watched the November recording of season two of theTV series, Iconoclats (on Sundance). The idea behind this provocative series is that two seemingly different icons share a similar human experience (Mario Batali on Michael Stipe or Mikhail Baryshnikov and Alice Waters). In this episode, comedian Dave Chappelle and poet Maya Angelou spend a day together at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where they discuss how poetry and comedy can bridge race, gender and generations. The interaction between the two is a treasure, as are both individuals. Also a treasure, are the shots of the two white coated chefs in the kitchen preparing, wow, could it be? It is! Fried chicken, golden brown and crispy on all sides and the lightest buttermilk biscuits and cooked apples from Angleou's cookbook, Hallelujah! The Welcome Table: A Lifetime of Memories with Recipes. Said Angelou, "I think Dave Chappelle and I are soulmates."
