Motherlode of Miner's Lettuce

Miner's Lettuce

It's February and my thoughts turn to the 49ers. Not the guys that throw pointy balls. The original ones, with the pick axes. The guys who gave us Miner's Lettuce. Or at least took that first nibble and lent their names to it. My introduction to miner's lettuce came during a dinner at the food counter at Nancy Oakes' Boulevard
restaurant a few years ago. While the others in our group talked amongst themselves, I peppered the garde-manger with questions about the salad greens. Pretty soon he'd set a variety of leaves on the counter in front of me. Let's just say that my first taste of Miner's lettuce was a Eureka moment.

Fast-forward to the next day and our group is on a calorie burner hike up Mt. Tamalpais, still talking about the previous night's food. I'm deep into an obsession over miner's lettuce and its lack of availability in the market. Suddenly I lose footing, look down, and lo and behold I am in a veritable mother lode.

Now, I would never tell anyone to illegally harvest from parklands. But it is a good metaphor for keeping your eyes open for culinary opportunities that surround us.
